Peter Busting Out of Burundi in 1991!

Burundi - Berghaus Tyger II

“I had a look around for a pic. Bizarelly I don’t have too many of my backpacks over the years. Found this one taken back in 1991 when I travelled around the equator. It was a Berghaus Tyger II and I think it was 70 or 80 litres. It accompanied me for the entire 378 days of the trip!

The photo was taken in the no-mans-land between Burundi and Tanzania. Me and my mates were busting out of Burundi after getting caught up in a civil war in Bujumbura. We were searched on the way to the border and my mate’s cooking kit rattled when the soldier shook it. The soldier thought it was a bomb. Turned out to be an avocado my mate had forgotten about. By the time we got to the first village in Tanzania it was dark and the border post deserted. The border guard was tracked down by a kid herding goats and he stamped us in by torchlight and hitching his pants up at the same time.” - Peter
